I’ve spent 25 years working where science, education, and community meet: first evaluating environmental programs for governments and international agencies, then building an environmental education organization from the ground up. My research explores how connection with nature supports personal, societal, and environmental well-being. My work on family time in nature has been cited in Richard Louv’s book Vitamin N. I’m a guest lecturer at the University of Maryland and Georgetown University and for the University of Maryland Extension’s Master Naturalist program.
Founder and Executive Director, Community Ecology Institute, 2016-2026
I founded CEI to cultivate communities where people and nature thrive together, and spent a decade growing it into an award-winning nonprofit with a staff of 25+ and an operating budget of over $1 million. Through CEI, I led hands-on environmental education programs including Columbia Families in Nature, the Roots & Wings Learning Community, the Green Seeds Internship program, and Nourishing Gardens. Research Associate and Teaching Assistant, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, 2000–2003
With the Department of Public Policy, I studied why government facilities voluntarily adopt environmental management systems and assessed water and wastewater infrastructure needs in the Appalachian region. I also taught lab and discussion sections for undergraduate courses in the Carolina Environmental Program, including Geographic Information Systems and Environment and Society, and instructed an environmental health course during a study abroad program in Salzburg, Austria.
My areas of expertise include environmental science and stewardship, such as watershed management and climate resilience; environmental program design, implementation, and evaluation; community-based education; grant development; and nonprofit leadership. I’m open to select consulting and advising projects. Get in touch.

"I was strongly encouraged to work with Chiara by another faculty at the college, and I have to say, the decision to work with Chiara was one of the best decisions I made as a student. Her expertise as a mentor, a professional, and educator was phenomenal. She challenged me to think deeply and critically and to rise to every occasion, even when the going got tough. Chiara is an accomplished expert in her field and is an asset to any student or organization that she works with. She has a gift for truly listening to her students' needs while also knowing exactly what advice or support they need." ~Prescott College Master's student
"You gave me the opportunity to use a completely different side of my brain. You pushed me out my comfort zone time and time again and allowed me to connect more deeply with nature than I have in a long while. You made me think and question and pushed me and motivated me and empowered me and continually inspired me. I am truly inspired by your work ethic, optimism, creativity, and tenacity. You are like a giant magnet that draws so many diverse community members to work towards such an incredible unifying goal. The way you connect people to each other and to nature, while simultaneously advocating for a more sustainable climate is such a gift to each of us and to our county as a whole." ~Summer intern from Georgetown University
"Can't thank you enough for all you're doing for F. She loves you, she loves the work, and she loves feeling like she's making a difference. Mentors like you change students' lives, and we're in your debt forever." ~Parent of intern at the Community Ecology Institute
"I got to visit Chiara’s farms project, and I am really impressed by the awesome experience of sustainability and community that she has helped to create for families in Maryland. Chiara is a wonderful example of a sustainability scholar-activist. It has been such a privilege to have worked with her this semester. Her syllabus for the phenomenology class was masterful, in my view. She’s top notch." ~Graduate student at Prescott College
